Jet and turboprop engines and integrated systems, Ohio headquarters
About GE Aerospace
GE Aerospace provides jet and turboprop engines as well as integrated systems for commercial, military, business and general aviation aircraft. It became an independent public company in April 2024, after separating from General Electric, and describes itself as a propulsion, services and systems company. The site gives its installed base as about 80,000 commercial and military aircraft engines, and its workforce as nearly 57,000 employees.
Business areas
- Commercial engines and services
- Military propulsion, including adaptive cycle engine development
- Integrated systems and technology
- Supply of complex gas turbine engine components
- Propeller manufacturing
- Aero-derivative gas turbines for marine use
- Engine maintenance and services
Safety and quality
The company runs a proprietary lean operating model called FLIGHT DECK and says safety comes first, followed by quality, delivery and cost. It established a Safety Management System ten years before the FAA proposed requiring one for aerospace manufacturers. Inspection tools include ultrasonic inspections in the shop, an AI blade inspection tool on the wing and AI guided white light inspection off the wing.
History
- 1917: GE developed a turbosupercharger for aircraft engines, tested on Pikes Peak
- 1942: the I-A engine, based on a design by Sir Frank Whittle, ran for the first time at the Lynn, Massachusetts plant, and two I-A engines powered the first flight of the Bell XP-59A Airacomet
- Later firsts include turbojets for flight at two and three times the speed of sound and the first high bypass turbofan in service
- The GE90-115B is rated at 115,000 pounds of thrust
Investment
GE Aerospace plans to invest about $1 billion in US manufacturing in 2026, with hiring of 5,000 people in the US. Funds are directed at commercial engine sites, particularly the CFM LEAP engine, spare parts production, durability kits and defense engine sites.
