About Kelly Aerospace Thermal Systems

Kelly Aerospace Thermal Systems (KATS) is an aircraft air conditioning manufacturer at 1625 Lost Nation Road in Willoughby, Ohio, at Lost Nation Airport (KLNN). The company designs and manufactures all-electric general aviation air conditioning systems for OEM, military and aftermarket use and says it has supported aircraft manufacturers, owners and operators for nearly 20 years. Its website describes KATS as the OEM air conditioning supplier for Cessna, Piper, Tecnam and other aircraft manufacturers.

Products

  • THERMACOOL all-electric air conditioning: a 28 volt brushless DC motor and compressor system that runs from a ground power unit or the aircraft electrical system, with no taxi, takeoff, landing or in-flight restrictions, a digital set-and-forget temperature and fan controller, a 20 degree F or more cabin temperature drop in about five minutes, peak draw of about 55 amps and installed weight of 49 to 65 lb depending on the aircraft
  • STC kits for Beechcraft, Cessna, Cirrus, Mooney, Piper and Tecnam aircraft
  • Electric air conditioning for experimental and light sport aircraft, including Lancair, Van's RV-10, Comp Air, ViperJet, Epic LT and Velocity
  • Dual alternator backup electrical system kits
  • Deicing products, with an information sheet on the site

The site also reports FAA STC certification of a THERMACOOL installation on the Enstrom 280FX helicopter.

Cirrus air conditioning

KATS has a dedicated Cirrus product page. THERMACOOL is FAA certified for the Cirrus SR20 and SR22 series under STC SA04037CH, kit KATS-13-003. On the Cirrus installation the system weighs 52 lb installed, draws about 45 amps in normal operation, moves the centre of gravity about 2 inches aft and keeps the full baggage area, because the components mount in the tail cone through the right-hand aft fuselage access panel. Cool air is distributed through a ducted headliner that matches the factory interior. The site quotes a two-week installation time and notes an STC approval for creating the access hole on SR22 serial numbers 842 and earlier (G1) that lack the panel. Cirrus documents published on the site include the SR20, SR22 and SR22T installation manual, headliner installation instructions, system schematic, ICA, weight and balance report and AFMS.

Installation and support

Factory installation is offered at Willoughby, Ohio (KLNN) and Montgomery, Alabama (KMGM), plus approved independent installers. The Service and Support pages publish installation manuals, schematics, ICAs, AFMS documents and weight and balance reports for each aircraft type.
