Aircraft insurance in plain words

Three things to know before you ask for a quote.

Hull and liability

Hull insurance pays for damage to your own aircraft. It covers the aircraft on the ground, while it taxis and in flight. The insurer pays up to an agreed value, which you set when you buy the policy.

Liability insurance pays for harm to other people and their property. That includes passengers, people on the ground and other aircraft. Most airports, lenders and flying clubs ask for liability cover before you fly. Many owners buy both in one policy.

What insurers ask a pilot

Your total flight hours, your hours in this type of aircraft, and your hours in the last year. Your licence and ratings, such as an instrument rating. Any accidents or claims in your past.

The aircraft's make, model, year and value. Where it is kept, in a hangar or outside, and at which airport. How you will use it, such as private flying, training or rental. Who else will fly it.

Why low-time pilots pay more

Insurers price on risk. Pilots with few hours, or few hours in the type, have more accidents on average. So the premium is higher at first, and some insurers ask for training with an instructor before you fly alone.

The premium usually falls as your hours grow and your record stays clean. An instrument rating, a hangar and a modern aircraft with good records also help. Ask what the insurer wants to see for a lower price next year.

Common questions

Updated 4 Nov 2026. Confirm the details with the company before you book.

What does aircraft insurance cover?
Hull cover pays for damage to your own aircraft. Liability cover pays for injury to people and damage to property that your aircraft causes. Policies can add passenger liability, cover for the aircraft in storage only, war and terrorism cover, and cover for pilots who rent or borrow aircraft.
How do I get aviation insurance quotes?
Send one request with the form on this page. We pass it to insurers and brokers that fit your aircraft and country, and they reply to you directly. Have your flight hours, ratings, the aircraft's details and value, and its home airport ready. You can also contact any company from its own page.
What is the difference between a broker and an underwriter?
An underwriter is the insurer. It takes the risk and pays the claims. A broker or agency works for you. It collects your details, asks several underwriters for terms and helps you compare them. Most private owners buy through a broker. Lloyd's of London is a market where many underwriting syndicates work side by side.
Does a student or low-time pilot pay more?
Usually yes. Insurers price on experience, so few total hours or few hours in the aircraft type mean a higher premium. Some insurers ask for dual training in the type before you fly alone. The price normally drops as your hours grow and your record stays clean.
Can I insure a drone or a helicopter here?
Yes. Use the filters above for drone insurance and helicopter insurance. Drone cover usually means liability for commercial work, with hull cover as an option. Helicopter cover depends on the type of flying, such as tours, utility work or private use.

About aviation insurance

Aviation insurance companies and brokers

Aviation insurance covers aircraft owners, operators and aviation businesses against physical damage and legal liability. The main policies are hull insurance (damage to the aircraft, on the ground and in flight), third-party and passenger liability, hull war cover, and products liability for manufacturers and maintenance organisations. Airports, ground handlers, flight schools and drone operators buy their own specialist policies.

Most buyers work through a specialist aviation broker, who places the risk with underwriters such as insurance companies or Lloyd's syndicates in the London market. Premiums depend on aircraft type and value, how the aircraft is used, and pilot qualifications and hours. Operators in the EU must also meet the minimum liability limits in Regulation (EC) 785/2004. Lessors and lenders usually ask to be named on the policy.

There are 115 aviation insurers and brokers listed, most in the United States (61), the United Kingdom (24) and Germany (4). They include:

Insurance is usually arranged alongside aircraft financing or aircraft leasing, and claims disputes may need aviation attorneys. Our guides explain aircraft hull insurance, aircraft liability insurance and private jet insurance costs and brokers.
