Sustainable aviation fuel
- Two flagship eSAF projects in Portugal, Project Galileu and Project Leca, developed to the RFNBO (renewable fuels of non-biological origin) standard and intended to contribute to Europe's 2030 eSAF mandate
- A long-term offtake partnership with Q8 Aviation, the aviation energy arm of Kuwait Petroleum International, which will take a share of Smartenergy's future eSAF output to meet ReFuelEU Aviation and UK SAF mandates
- A strategic partnership between its Evolve Fuels AG unit and Burckhardt Compression AG
Hydrogen and renewables
Smartenergy promotes the 100 MWe Orange.bat green hydrogen project in Onda, Castellon, which serves the Spanish ceramic cluster, holds the first integrated environmental authorisation for a green hydrogen project in the Valencian Community and was awarded EUR 82.5 million over ten years at EUR 0.69 per kilogram under the European Hydrogen Bank's Auction as a Service scheme, linked to an expected 119,604 tonnes of green hydrogen; a hydrogen distribution network in Castellon is also advancing. The firm is developing a 200 MWe green hydrogen plant in Sardinia, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Egypt, has inaugurated large solar plants in Portugal with EKZ, including the Betty plant, and in 2026 agreed a strategic collaboration with ABB to de-risk and scale integrated solar, battery storage and hydrogen platforms in Spain and Portugal. It received recognition at COP28 and regularly speaks at the New Energy Investor Summit, Dii Desert Energy and hydrogen conferences.
