1PointFive
Direct air capture and carbon storage
About 1PointFive
1PointFive is a carbon capture and storage company focused on reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It develops direct air capture and underground storage hubs in Texas. Its work helps enable lower carbon fuels and products.
The company removes carbon dioxide from the air with direct air capture, or DAC. Giant fans pull air into a facility, where the CO2 is captured. The CO2 is then processed and stored deep underground. Every tonne is measured, verified and accounted for. This lets the company offer carbon dioxide removal credits, where one credit equals one metric ton of CO2.
Its first large facility, STRATOS, is under construction in the Texas Permian Basin. The company says STRATOS will be the world's largest DAC facility, designed to capture up to 500,000 tonnes of CO2 a year once fully operational. The groundbreaking included Oxy and project partners Carbon Engineering and Worley. A South Texas DAC hub has been awarded up to 500 million dollars in US Department of Energy support. Next generation facilities could double the capacity.
1PointFive also offers geologic sequestration, which stores CO2 in rock formations deep underground. It plans to store CO2 from DAC and to offer secure storage to industrial plants that capture carbon at the source. The company says it has secured storage capacity for up to six billion tonnes of CO2.
Its customers are companies that want to address emissions they cannot remove by other means, including firms in chemicals, petrochemicals, aviation, maritime and long-haul trucking. The company lists aviation, consumer products and maritime as industries. All Nippon Airways was the first airline to sign a purchase agreement for the company's removal credits. Microsoft agreed to buy 500,000 tonnes of DAC credits, and Amazon agreed to a 10-year deal for 250,000 tonnes.
The team has taken part in Aviation Festival Asia, the World Aviation Festival and a conference of the International Civil Aviation Organization to discuss how DAC can help aviation reach net zero. The company says its team draws on more than 50 years of experience in carbon management and DAC technology. Its name comes from the Paris Agreement goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees C.
