About Arcadia eFuels

Arcadia eFuels is developing plants that make net zero carbon fuels, with sites planned in Denmark, the United Kingdom and Texas. Its fuels are made from captured carbon dioxide and renewable electricity. They are meant to work in existing engines and use existing fuel infrastructure.

The company makes eFuels in a few steps. Carbon dioxide is captured from the air or from an industrial or biogenic source. Renewable power splits water into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis. The hydrogen is combined with the carbon dioxide to make syngas. Further processing produces sustainable aviation fuel, eDiesel, eNaphtha and LPG.

Arcadia says its fuels are drop-in fuels. Its eDiesel meets ASTM D975 and the European standard EN 15940. Its eSAF complies with ASTM D7566 for Fischer-Tropsch synthesized paraffinic kerosene and can be blended at 50 percent into fossil jet fuel.

The company plans several plants, each making 80,000 tons, or 100 million liters, of eFuels a year. The focus is eDiesel and electro sustainable aviation fuel, called eSAF, for long haul transport that is hard to electrify, such as aviation, shipping and trucking. Planned sites include Vordingborg in Denmark, Teesside in the United Kingdom and Portland or Corpus Christi in Texas. The Vordingborg plant is planned to make about 100 million liters of eSAF a year.

Arcadia says its plant design is fully electrified and uses no fossil inputs for raw materials. The company says its team brings more than 250 years of leadership at global companies and over 150 years of technical experience in hydrogen, syngas gas-to-liquids and refining. It also cites more than 15 plant projects on four continents and 70 billion dollars of capital projects delivered.

Funding and policy support the plans. A related project, ENDOR, has received European Union Innovation Fund support. Arcadia also won a 12.3 million pound UK grant under the Advanced Fuel Fund. The company points to rules that drive demand, including ReFuelEU Aviation, which requires 2 percent SAF in 2025 rising to 6 percent by 2030, the UK SAF Mandate at 10 percent by 2030 and the US SAF Grand Challenge.
