Pilot Mental Health Campaign
Grassroots campaign to reform aviation mental health rules
About Pilot Mental Health Campaign
The Pilot Mental Health Campaign (PMHC) is a non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organisation in the United States working to reform how mental health is handled in aviation. Founded by a coalition of aviators and healthcare professionals, it describes itself as the only advocacy group dedicated to creating a modern aeromedical system that works for both pilots and passengers, and its mission is to reform FAA regulations on mental health and build a culture in the industry that places greater emphasis on pilot well-being while enhancing flight safety.
Advocacy
- Two bills introduced in the 119th Congress with the support of multiple members of Congress, including legislation championed by Representative Sean Casten under the principle that pilots should not be grounded for seeking mental health care, and a campaign asking supporters to contact their representatives
- Public dialogue through national media, including Reuters reporting that dozens of airline pilots are reluctant to disclose even minor or treatable mental health issues because of the risk of grounding and career-ending reviews, and Spectrum News coverage of the congressional bill
- Personal stories from pilots and families, including the story of John Hauser, a Chicago-area student pilot, and accounts of the choice many pilots describe between their career and their mental health
- Advocacy for a focus on health and well-being in aviation and for evidence-based medical policies
