FreeFlyer astrodynamics software and space mission engineering

About a.i. solutions

a.i. solutions, Inc. provides engineering services and software for space mission planning, design and operations to civil, commercial and defence organisations. Founder Bob Sperling, a Syracuse University graduate, wrote the first version of FreeFlyer astrodynamics software for missions at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and incorporated the company on 12 December 1996, opening its first office in Lanham, Maryland. The company now has nearly 450 employees at four US locations: Lanham, Maryland; Cape Canaveral, Florida; Huntsville, Alabama; and Colorado Springs, Colorado. It won its first NASA Launch Services Program work as a subcontractor at Kennedy Space Center and was awarded NASA's Mission Operations Mission Services contract in 2002, and celebrated its 30th anniversary in December 2025.

FreeFlyer and software products

  • FreeFlyer: ITAR-free astrodynamics software with heritage on more than 250 missions, covering high-fidelity propagation and force modelling, constellation and relative motion analysis, sensor coverage and access, impulsive and low-thrust manoeuvre modelling with tank and thruster models, optimisation with SNOPT, Ipopt and NLopt, and orbit determination with batch least squares, extended and unscented Kalman filters and square root information filters
  • FreeFlyer Script with logic operators, a command palette and auto-complete for building mission sequences and custom models
  • Meridian, Atlas and ObsSIM, which with FreeFlyer form the flight dynamics ground system for Sierra Space's Dream Chaser
  • Deep Space Trajectory Explorer

Flight heritage and services

FreeFlyer computes the daily flight dynamics for the International Space Station, powers the James Webb Space Telescope flight dynamics ground system including launch window and insertion manoeuvre analysis, is used by NASA to optimise Gateway's near-rectilinear halo orbit, and plans manoeuvres to maintain the four-satellite MMS tetrahedron. Engineering services include flight dynamics ground systems, mission planning, launch site and vehicle engineering, wargaming, training and collision avoidance, and mission and quality assurance. For more than 15 years a.i. solutions has supported the Missile Defense Agency, holding the quality assurance task order under the MiDAESS contract and the follow-on TEAMS contracts, and it holds a Department of War prime contract.
