Montana Renewables
Sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel producer in Great Falls, Montana
About Montana Renewables
Montana Renewables, LLC is a renewable fuels producer in Great Falls, Montana, and a subsidiary of Calumet, Inc. On 18 November 2021 it was separated legally and commercially from Calumet and designated an unrestricted subsidiary as part of the conversion of part of the Great Falls refinery to renewable production. The company makes sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel, renewable naphtha and renewable hydrogen from waste and renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oils, animal fats, grease and algae, with the facility powered by renewable energy, and its location puts it close to feedstock sources and rail networks serving the north-western United States and Canada.
Sustainable aviation fuel
- MaxSAF SPK, a 100 percent renewable synthetic paraffinic kerosene meeting ASTM D7566 that is blended with conventional jet fuel to make sustainable aviation fuel, with into-wing volumes roughly double the neat SPK after blending
- Production of approximately 30 million gallons of SPK a year, with an announced capital-efficient expansion to 200 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel over the next two to three years
- One of the first SAF producers in North America to hold ISCC CORSIA certification, with ISCC certifications held since 2022 and a first RSB certification obtained in November 2025
- Patent-pending technology under development for using green hydrogen in the conversion process to lower life cycle emissions, and a new hydrogen plant that will recycle hydrogen from the renewable diesel reactor
Other products and site
Renewable diesel from the plant meets ASTM D975 in the United States and EN 590 in Europe, and renewable naphtha meets ASTM D4814 and EN 228 for spark-ignition engines. The Great Falls site also produces conventional products, applies carbon capture and sequestration of 40 percent by weight of feed into specialty asphalt, and has increased capacity from 10,000 to 30,000 barrels per day, with more than one billion dollars invested since Calumet acquired the business in 2012. Calumet's presence supports more than 2,600 permanent jobs in Great Falls, with 500 construction jobs during the conversion, and the company has announced 70,000 dollars in community investments and taken part in the Minnesota SAF Hub.
