About YEESS

YEESS, the Young European Enterprises Syndicate for Space, is an association founded in 2021 by European space startups and SMEs to represent the emerging space sector and foster its role in Europe's space ambitions. Recognising shared challenges such as access to contracts, raising private capital and a desire to take part in European sovereignty, the founding members Satlantis, Anywaves, Constellr, Exotrail, Aerospacelab and Pangea Aerospace met at events such as the IAC and the European Space Conference and created a common platform to hold dialogues with ESA and the European Commission on the needs of young companies. The syndicate describes its purpose as facilitating and accelerating the New Space dynamic in Europe and supporting Europe's competitiveness in space.

Members and governance

  • Members since the founding include ReOrbit, Cailabs, U-Space, Isar Aerospace, Exolaunch, Latitude, Unseenlabs, Infinite Orbits and ORUS, spanning Earth observation, hyperspectral imagery, RF signals intelligence, launch and in-space logistics, nanosatellites, propulsion, space mobility and antennas
  • The board is led by president Juan Tomas Hernani, co-founder and CEO of Satlantis, and vice-president Nicolas Capet, CEO of Anywaves and a former CNES antenna engineer, with board members including Dr Olga Stelmakh-Drescher of Exolaunch, the co-founder and CEO of Pangea Aerospace, Cailabs founder Dr Jean-Francois Morizur and Exotrail's vice-president for public affairs and ESG
  • An annual event gathering members with ESA and European Commission representatives, and an annual General Assembly that votes on the syndicate's structure and manifesto and reviews membership applications; Exolaunch and Cailabs joined the board at the 2023 assembly

Principles

  • Advocate a broader use of space for every European citizen and company, since space is key to this century's global challenges
  • Organise a European preference built on fair competition among all space actors, increasing the share of startups and SMEs in European demand and balancing cooperation between newcomers and incumbents
  • Encourage private means to answer public needs where a viable commercial market exists, prefer public purchases over subsidised technologies for better product-to-market fit, and favour a step-by-step path to complex space services to reduce budget and schedule drift

Membership benefits

Members gain opportunities for commercial partnerships and institutional funding, consultation on space policy and initiatives, early access to sector news and data through European and national delegates including meetings with ESA leadership, ministers and committees, marketing through YEESS branding at institutional events such as the ESA 4S Symposium, and voting rights on governance. News on the site covers a newly elected board and strategic roadmap, the syndicate's presence at the 17th European Space Conference and members at Space Tech Expo Europe.
