European Space Agency
Europe's intergovernmental space agency since 1975

About European Space Agency
The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organisation created in 1975 to explore and use space for exclusively peaceful purposes on behalf of its member states. It combines the financial and intellectual resources of its members to carry out space programmes that no single European country could accomplish alone, and its headquarters are in Paris.
What ESA does
ESA's job, in its own words, is to draw up the European space programme and carry it through. Its programmes are designed to find out more about Earth, its immediate space environment, the Solar System and the Universe, to develop satellite-based technologies and services, and to promote European industry. Under Article II of its founding Convention, the agency:
- Elaborates and implements a long-term European space policy and recommends space objectives to member states
- Elaborates and implements activities and programmes in the space field
- Coordinates the European space programme with national programmes, in particular for applications satellites
- Elaborates and implements the industrial policy appropriate to its programme
Members
Member states are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Cyprus, Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania are associate members, and Bulgaria, Croatia and Malta have cooperation agreements.
Activities
ESA's portal covers space exploration, human spaceflight, launchers, telecommunications, navigation, Earth observation and space science. Current activity reported on the site includes the return of ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot from her first mission to the International Space Station, first views of Earth from the Sentinel-3C satellite launched with FLEX on Vega-C, the Hera asteroid mission approaching Didymos, and the Solar Orbiter, Juice and Webb missions. ESA runs procurements to accomplish its missions and support the competitiveness of European space industry, invites ideas for space research and technology, and offers commercial space opportunities through its business programmes.
