About European Commission

The European Commission is an official institution of the European Union. It works on EU strategy, policy, law, budget and international relations across the Union. Its official website explains its role, leadership and corporate policies.

The Commission is organised around a President, Commissioners, departments and executive agencies, and staff. Its role covers strategy and policy, law, budget and funding, and international relations. Its service standards include transparency, ethics and good administration, a human resources strategy and its use of languages.

For 2024 to 2029 the Commission lists seven priorities. These are competitiveness, security and defence, European social fairness, quality of life, democracy and our values, a global Europe, and EU budget and reform.

Its policy topics cover a wide range. Economy and business topics include budget, competition, customs, energy, financial services, the single market and taxation. Other groups cover education, society and rights, and health and environment. Transport and tourism sits under health and environment, along with climate action and public health. International topics include trade, enlargement, humanitarian aid and foreign affairs and security policy. Justice and security topics include borders, civil protection, defence and internal security.

The Commission publishes news, a press corner, visual stories and an audiovisual portal. It also offers information on jobs and how to join its staff.

Transparency is a stated principle. Citizens and residents of EU countries have a right of access to documents of the Commission, the European Parliament and the Council. The Commission runs a transparency register, a register of committees that oversee its implementing acts and a database of EU funding recipients. It keeps a register of expert groups and publishes codes of conduct for Commissioners and staff. People can send complaints if they think the Commission has broken its Code of Good Administrative Behaviour.
