The Weather Company
Weather data and aviation operations tools
About The Weather Company
The Weather Company is a US weather data and forecasting business that sells weather tools to airlines, media groups, advertisers and government users.
The company says it began as an idea in a basement studio and is now nearly five decades old. It mixes expert meteorologists with technology. It holds dozens of patents. Its mission is to build trust through science, help people and businesses make better decisions, and support progress for people and the planet.
Aviation has a long history here. In 1980 the company was the first to give aviation weather briefings by dial-up. That service is known today as Pilotbrief. Pilotbrief now helps the cockpit and the ground make quick, shared decisions.
The aviation range covers several tools. Maverick Dispatch gives dispatchers a flight tracking view. Maverick Ground Ops uses predictive data and alerts to cut weather delays on the ground. Maverick WXAlert warns pilots of weather hazards and suggests better routes through ACARS. Fusion tracks flights using weather intelligence so teams can manage by exception. The company also offers aviation weather forecast services, where its own experts support safe and efficient operations.
Outside aviation, the company runs a weather data API platform so customers can feed weather data into their own apps, business processes or models. It has a GRAF forecast model for high-resolution global forecasts. It also sells broadcast and media tools such as Max Cloud, Max Storm and ReelSphere. Its advertising products use weather and audience data. A government and defence unit serves public sector users.
The Weather Company also runs three consumer brands: The Weather Channel, Weather Underground and Storm Radar. Other milestones include the launch of weather.com in 1995, custom weather alerts to desktop, mobile and landline phones in 2000, and the launch of The Weather Channel mobile app in 2004. In 2012 The Weather Channel became the first national organisation in North America to name winter storms.
