Engineering and technology for sustainable aviation fuel production

Technip Energies

About Technip Energies

Technip Energies is an engineering and technology company for the energy transition with leadership positions in liquefied natural gas, hydrogen and ethylene and growing positions in blue and green hydrogen, sustainable chemistry and CO2 management. For aviation, it has been active in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) market for nearly two decades under its Fly to SAF programme, bringing design and technology expertise, in-house technologies and global project delivery to fuel producers and feedstock suppliers. The company states that it is supporting more than six million tonnes of built or under-engineering SAF capacity worldwide and works with industry players including LanzaJet, Neste, TotalEnergies and Arcadia eFuels to accelerate commercial-scale production.

SAF pathways

  • Alcohol-to-Jet: bioethanol from waste, off-gases, CO2 or biomass converted to SAF using technology licensed by LanzaJet, with Technip Energies' Hummingbird technology dehydrating ethanol to ethylene as the first step; projects include LanzaJet's Freedom Pines plant in Georgia, the world's first commercial-scale ATJ plant, LanzaTech's DRAGON project in the UK, Project Ulysses in Australia, COSMO Oil in Japan, IOCL in India and Project FLITE in Europe
  • Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA): the most widely applied pathway, converting used cooking oil and animal fats through hydrotreating and hydroisomerisation, with projects for Neste in Singapore and Rotterdam and TotalEnergies' Grandpuits zero-crude platform in France
  • Gasification Fischer-Tropsch eFuel and Power-to-Liquids pathways, developed through in-house innovation and collaboration with technology licensors

Market view

The company notes that SAF is made from non-petroleum feedstocks such as used cooking oil, agricultural and municipal waste and captured CO2, and cites ICAO projections of up to 17 million tonnes of annual SAF production by 2030 as airlines pursue 2050 net-zero goals and new regulatory mandates. Its wider portfolio covers floating LNG, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, zero-carbon energies, advanced materials and catalysts, project management consultancy, operations and maintenance consulting, and monitoring, automation and inspection services, and it lists aerospace and related industries among its markets.
