EU skills partnership for the downstream space and geoinformation sector

SPACE4GEO

About SPACE4GEO

SPACE4GEO is the Large-scale Skills Partnership for the downstream segment of the space economy dedicated to data, services and applications, promoted under the European Commission's Pact for Skills initiative. Its objective is to promote the upskilling and reskilling of the workforce and to attract new talent to the downstream space and geoinformation sector, where Earth observation and GNSS applications require technical, managerial, academic and entrepreneurial skills. The partnership counts 77 members from 14 countries, spanning public administrations, higher education institutions, vocational education and training providers, commercial companies, research centres and sectoral associations, and is open to all key stakeholders in the sector and beyond.

Aims

  • Address a gender-imbalanced workforce, an ageing society and a shortage of relevant skills, and correct an academic offer that focuses mainly on the upstream space sector while application domains are under-represented
  • Provide equal and inclusive access to quality training to activate more people for the space labour market across vertical sectors, guiding learners in skilling, upskilling and reskilling
  • Set up a permanent observatory of skills needs to anticipate trends arising from societal, economic and technological change
  • Build on the EO4GEO Blueprint project and its sector skills strategy with wider coverage of Earth observation, geoinformation and related application domains

Membership and cooperation

Members can take part in European Commission discussion panels on skills development in the space domain, receive early information on skills and capacity-building funding calls, contribute to education and training services, form transnational consortia for proposals and tenders, and join an international partnership open to collaboration outside the EU. SPACE4GEO works with the Copernicus Academy and Relays, the UNIVERSEH alliance, the ASTRAIOS, STARS*EU and GIS4Schools projects and the EOTEC DevNet, and is promoted within the EU Aerospace and Defence industrial ecosystem as a complement to the Aerospace and Defence Large Scale Partnership covering aeronautics, defence and the upstream space segment. Its activities include a manifesto, newsletters, the COMPLEMENTS project launched in Genoa, and a panel on skills and talent for the space sector at the 18th European Space Conference.
