About HMMH

HMMH is an environmental and transportation planning consultancy based in Burlington, Massachusetts. It works on noise and vibration control, air quality analysis, airport and airspace planning, and climate and energy solutions. The firm has offices across the United States and serves government and private clients.

HMMH was founded in 1981 as a spin-off from Bolt Beranek and Newman. Its founders set out to give airports high quality noise consulting. They worked on some of the earliest transportation noise challenges, including early work for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and for Amtrak's Northeast Corridor.

Aviation is a core market. HMMH has more than 40 years of consulting and research projects for airports and aviation clients. It studies, assesses and reduces the effects of new and existing transport projects on nearby communities. Airport clients have included the Massachusetts Port Authority, which the firm has supported for over 30 years.

The firm also does research and sets policy on noise issues that airports face every day. It does research directly for the FAA and for the National Academy of Sciences' cooperative research programs. It advises the FAA's Center of Excellence for Alternative Jet Fuels and Environment, known as ASCENT. HMMH has also built its own software tools, including InFLIGHT, RealContours and SoGlare.

Federal programs are another market. Since 1981, federal clients have used HMMH for modelling, analysis and advice. The firm also works for the United States armed forces and other federal agencies.

Outside aviation, HMMH serves highway, rail and transit, construction and architecture, parks and recreation, and sustainability and energy clients. It has provided noise and vibration assessments for transit and rail systems across the US for more than three decades. It also offers training and runs a project delivery excellence award.
