Federal Aviation Administration

US civil aviation regulator and air traffic service provider

About Federal Aviation Administration

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is an operating mode of the US Department of Transportation, headquartered at 800 Independence Avenue SW in Washington, DC. Its continuing mission is to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world, and it says it strives to reach the next level of safety and efficiency while demonstrating global leadership in how new users and technologies are safely integrated into the aviation system. The agency describes itself as accountable to the American public and to its aviation stakeholders.

What the FAA does

  • Aviation safety: air carrier and air agency certification, aircraft certification including the vintage and experimental aircraft programme, general aviation and recreational aircraft oversight, aviation medical examiners, hazardous materials safety enforcement and draft safety documents open for public comment
  • Air traffic: operating the national air traffic control system, publishing air traffic plans and publications, conducting environmental reviews and training air traffic controllers, including a safety initiative that gives controllers hands-on flight deck experience and a record year for controller trainee hiring
  • Airports: engineering, design and construction standards, the Airport Cooperative Research Program, the Passenger Facility Charge programme, airport safety information and grant programmes
  • Commercial space transportation through the Office of Commercial Space Transportation, and uncrewed aircraft systems, including certification of remote pilots and commercial operators, rules for recreational flyers and community-based organisations, and funding of drone research to support safe integration

Values and resources

The FAA's stated values are safety as its passion, excellence as its promise, integrity as its touchstone, people as its strength and innovation as its signature. The agency publishes legislation, policies, regulations and guidance, compliance and enforcement information, plans and reports, a history programme with publications from 1903 onward and a hotline for safety concerns. Members of the public can call 866-TELL-FAA with questions, and the agency communicates through news releases and social media on topics ranging from enforcement actions to airspace modernisation.
