EUROSAM
Aster missile air defence systems: SAMP/T NG, SAAM and PAAMS
About EUROSAM
EUROSAM is a French-Italian joint venture that designs, produces, sells, exports and maintains long-range ground-based and naval air defence systems. It was created by MBDA and Thales, European groups in missiles, systems and radars, and is based at La Boursidiere in Le Plessis-Robinson, near Paris. Its systems are built around the Aster missile family, a single interceptor family designed to defeat threats from short to long range, and are in operational service with France, Italy, the United Kingdom and export customers.
Ground systems
SAMP/T NG is the new European long-range ground-based air defence system. A battery holds up to 48 Aster missiles ready to fire, with a multi-function radar (Ground Fire 300 or Kronos Grand Mobile High Power), an engagement module and up to six launchers carrying eight missiles each. The command and control module uses an open software architecture and enhanced connectivity, with a crew of up to four building an integrated air and space tactical picture. The system is designed to counter manoeuvring ballistic missiles, supersonic missiles, UAVs and highly manoeuvring aircraft in saturation attacks, to operate in dense civilian airspace alongside friendly aircraft, and to be interoperable with NATO and coalition networks. OCCAR awarded the SAMP/T NG development contract on 19 March 2021; two successful firings were performed in France and Italy on 15 December 2025, and on 30 April 2026 OCCAR, on behalf of France, awarded EUROSAM a contract for a multi-layered version with the Aster and VL MICA missiles.
Naval systems
SAAM provides ship self-defence with up to 48 ready-to-fire Aster 15 missiles and multiple simultaneous engagements; it serves on the aircraft carriers Charles de Gaulle and Cavour and on the Saudi navy's Al Riyadh class frigates. PAAMS, the Principal Anti-Air Missile System, combines a multi-function radar (EMPAR or Sampson) with Aster 15 and Aster 30 interceptors for area defence, consort protection and self-defence, and serves on the four Horizon class destroyers Forbin, Chevalier Paul, Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio, among other ships.
Support
EUROSAM provides in-service support, works with contracting agencies such as OCCAR, publishes a glossary and media library, and states commitments to ethics and compliance.
