eFuel Alliance
Alliance for carbon-neutral renewable eFuels in Europe
About eFuel Alliance
The eFuel Alliance e.V. is an alliance for carbon-neutral renewable fuels, formed to fight climate change by promoting the industrial production and use of eFuels. Registered as an association with offices at Markgrafenstrasse 25 in Berlin and Avenue Palmerston 26 in Brussels, it brings together companies along the eFuel value chain and speaks for them in European and German policy debates. Its board is chaired by Dr Monika Griefahn, a founding member of Greenpeace Germany and former Lower Saxony environment minister, with Tomas Malango of Repsol as vice-chair.
What eFuels are
- Synthetic fuels produced with electricity from renewable sources, water and CO2 captured from the air, with hydrogen as the basis for all eFuels; European regulation describes them as renewable fuels of non-biological origin
- Usable in all vehicles and heating systems powered by liquid or gaseous energy carriers, including trucks, aircraft, construction machinery and oil-fired heating, and distributable through existing tank and distribution infrastructure
- Climate neutral in their use phase, with lower technical efficiency than direct electrification that the alliance says can be offset by producing them in regions with abundant solar and wind power, which also reduces dependence on a few fossil fuel exporting states
Positions
- Openness to technology in climate protection policy, with promotion of synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels as an efficient path to cutting greenhouse gas emissions
- A holistic economy for hydrogen-derived products in Europe, so that Europe can secure its competitiveness as an industrial location
- More ambitious quotas and mandates for road, aviation and maritime fuels, as well as CO2-based taxation, since the alliance argues that the political framework for industrial-scale eFuel production is still lacking ahead of the first binding mandates in 2030
Resources
The alliance publishes an eFuels production map developed with Porsche Consulting that gives an overview of announced production plants worldwide, explanatory material on global energy potentials and efficiency, and an image film. Companies interested in membership or in sourcing eFuel quantities can contact the Berlin office or use the website's enquiry forms.
