About Axens

Axens is a French technology, catalyst and engineering group that provides solutions for converting oil and biomass into cleaner fuels, producing and purifying petrochemical intermediates, treating and converting natural gas, chemically recycling plastics and capturing carbon. Built on more than 40 years of biobased feedstock and biotechnology research at IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN), whose headquarters are in Rueil-Malmaison near Paris, Axens has more than 2,200 employees worldwide, over 3,000 industrial units under licence and produces more than 75,000 tonnes of catalysts and adsorbents a year. It covers the whole value chain from feasibility studies through unit start-up and follow-up over the life of the plant.

Sustainable aviation fuel

  • A renewable fuels and bio-based chemicals portfolio producing sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel, cellulosic ethanol, bio-olefins and bio-aromatics from vegetable oils and fats, lignocellulosic biomass and biomass residues
  • Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology, catalysts and services: Axens describes itself as the only supplier able to provide the technology, catalysts and associated support together, with a first ATJ project in Japan aligned with the SAF roadmap of the Japanese government and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)
  • The BioTJet project, presented as an immediate response to decarbonising aviation because its fuel can replace fossil jet fuel without significant changes to aircraft or infrastructure
  • Technical papers and brochures on SAF, including the role of low-carbon hydrogen in SAF production, and participation in the International Sustainable Aviation Research conference

Wider offering

Axens' domains cover refining, petrochemicals and gas technologies, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, pollution and contaminant control for air and water, circular economy technologies, catalysts, adsorbents and gradings, equipment supply including modular units, furnaces and waste heat recovery, and services from technical support and performance management to digital applications and training. The group operates regional organisations including Axens Americas, with offices in Houston and Princeton, and a presence in Africa, and publishes corporate social responsibility commitments built on three pillars of sustainable development.
