About Apical

Apical Group is a vegetable oil processor with a vertically integrated business model spanning mid-stream refining and value-added downstream processing, supplying the food, feed, oleochemicals and renewable fuel industries. Part of the RGE group, it operates refineries, oleochemical plants, renewable fuel plants and kernel crushing plants across Indonesia, China and Spain, with joint ventures extending its processing and distribution reach. Its products are used in more than 50 countries and the group employs a multinational workforce of over 3,000 people. The headquarters entity is AAA Oils and Fats Pte Ltd, with Apical Oils and Fats Sdn Bhd based at Bangsar South in Kuala Lumpur, and sustainability teams in Kuala Lumpur and in Pekanbaru, Dumai, Medan, Jakarta and Balikpapan in Indonesia.

Sustainable aviation fuel

  • Apical has entered the sustainable aviation fuel market through a joint venture with CEPSA to build what it describes as the largest second-generation biofuels plant in Southern Europe, with an annual SAF capacity of 500,000 tonnes
  • Feedstock is waste and residue extracted from Apical's own global supply chain in a transparent, traceable manner
  • The company notes that SAF is compatible with existing aircraft and fuelling infrastructure without engine modification and can cut carbon emissions by up to 90 percent compared with conventional jet fuel, in a sector that accounts for 2 to 3 percent of global emissions and has committed to net zero by 2050
  • A SAF factsheet is available on the site

Products and operations

Apical produces edible oils and derivatives for consumer goods manufacturers, oleochemicals such as fatty acids, soap noodles and glycerine, and biodiesel from palm oil. Its 2016 acquisition of Spanish company Bio-Oils added the Huelva biodiesel plant at La Rabida with a production capacity of 459,000 tonnes, and in 2017 it formed PT Apical Kao Chemicals with Kao Corporation to manufacture fatty acids in Indonesia. Its milestones include a refinery in Nanjing, China, a palm kernel crushing plant and biodiesel plant in Dumai, Indonesia, and ISCC certification for AAA Oils and Fats. Kelvin Tio is president of Apical, having previously served as managing director of Asian Agri.

Sustainability

Apical follows the 5Cs philosophy of doing what is good for the community, country, climate and customer before the company, holds a No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation sustainability policy, publishes a sustainability progress dashboard and grievance procedure, and takes part in the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, ISCC and the Tropical Forest Alliance.
