Apcela
Software-defined networks and air-to-ground inflight connectivity for business aviation
About Apcela
Apcela designs and manages software-defined, cloud-optimised networks for enterprises and, more recently, inflight connectivity for business aviation, under the line one network from the trading floor to 41,000 feet. The company earned its reputation building high-performance application delivery networks for high-frequency capital markets trading, where performance is measured in microseconds, then expanded to enterprise customers such as Dow Jones, Language Line and Lego with a global low-latency backbone, more than 60 CloudHubs in carrier-neutral data centres and direct peering with cloud providers including Microsoft, Amazon, SAP and Salesforce. It describes itself as a network operator rather than a feature vendor or reseller, supporting customers directly.
Inflight connectivity
- Broadband real-time air-to-ground connectivity for charter operators and corporate flight departments replacing legacy ATG, with a separate connection for each aircraft so bandwidth is not shared, and 60 MHz of spectrum that the company says offers 20 times the capacity of legacy ATG services
- Nearly 30,000 beams and a horizon-looking architecture intended to keep performance consistent in high-traffic areas, with low latency for video calling, livestreaming, cloud applications and large file transfers
- Apcela ONE, a patented air-to-ground system combining 5G and LTE features with a single lightweight, low-drag antenna for smaller business aircraft, a software-defined radio updated without downtime and an aircraft base radio that can be mounted inside or outside the pressure vessel; the hardware is designed and built in the US without components from entities banned by the US
- The Apcela DUAL system with an extra antenna for mid-size and large airframes, service plans matched to budget and mission profile with discounts for fleets and multi-year terms, and Sign and Fly financing with no upfront capital
Enterprise networks
- Mission-specific networks for applications and AI workloads that cannot tolerate the patchwork connectivity of multi-cloud, hybrid and distributed environments
- A software-defined approach to network management and distributed security that pushes IDS, IPS, firewalls and malware detection to the edge
- The Alpha Platform for capital markets, and partnerships with AWS, Equinix, HPE Aruba Networking and Cisco shown on the site
