About TWI

TWI is a membership-based independent research and technology organisation headquartered at Granta Park, Great Abington, Cambridge, that provides authoritative and impartial expert advice, know-how and safety assurance in engineering, materials and joining technologies. Descended from the British Welding Research Association, it spans innovation, knowledge transfer and problem resolution across welding, joining, surface engineering, inspection and whole-life integrity management, and its Cambridge headquarters operates 54,000 square metres of manufacturing, testing and training space. TWI has advised the worldwide aerospace industry, including the main airframe, engine and component manufacturers, for many years.

Aerospace

  • Joining solutions for the broadest range of aerospace materials and safety-critical applications, including laser beam welding and friction stir welding of airframe structures
  • Aircraft engine component production using TIG welding, keyhole plasma welding, linear friction welding, electron beam welding and laser direct metal deposition
  • Support for the growing use of composites, with future work extending to rotorcraft, supplier companies and the sensors market
  • Non-destructive inspection (NDI) of airframe structures, engines and main components

Technologies and services

  • In-chamber and out-of-chamber electron beam welding, friction stir welding of steel, powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressing, coating and surface engineering and arc, electron beam and thermal spray additive manufacturing
  • Testing including fracture, fatigue, corrosion, aggressive environment, coatings and full-scale four-point rotating bend testing, metallurgy and materials characterisation and residual stress measurement
  • Inspection and monitoring: phased array ultrasonic testing, time of flight diffraction, guided wave long range ultrasonics, alternating current field measurement, robotic automated inspection, AI in NDT and structural health monitoring
  • Engineering consultancy covering product and process development, failure analysis and repair, engineering critical assessment, risk-based inspection, site audits and certification, dispute and litigation support and technical literature reviews

Organisation

TWI works with industrial members through confidential single client projects whose outcomes and intellectual property belong to the client, runs joint research programmes through an innovation network and the National Structural Integrity Research Centre, and is the world's largest training organisation in welding, welding inspection and non-destructive testing, with more than 20,000 participants a year. Its inventions include advances in MIG and TIG welding, CTOD and brittle fracture methods, fatigue design S-N curves and linear friction and friction stir welding. The Welding Institute, its professional institution, has a separate membership of 6,000 individuals, and TWI maintains regional offices covering mainland Europe and Turkey, the Middle East, Africa and Pakistan, and South East Asia and Australia.
