Turion Space

Turion Space is a United States space company that builds satellites, mission software and payloads. Its website says it exists to make a spacefaring future for humanity inevitable, and that it works to build the foundational infrastructure of space. The about page says the company was founded five years ago, was accepted into Y Combinator in the summer 2021 batch, and now has two satellites on orbit and thirty government contracts.

What it does

• Tactical space: highly maneuverable space missions, including space domain awareness and rendezvous and proximity operations around objects in different orbits
• Mission software: end to end mission planning that brings modeling and simulation, ground software and flight software into one command and control platform
• Space logistics: orbital transport, refueling and servicing, meant to make long duration operations sustainable
• Satellites, software and payloads engineered together to sense, plan and act at scale

Starforge

The site presents Starforge as the combination of its satellite technology, ground software and manufacturing process. The stated goal is to send one spacecraft, then dozens, into deep space to mine near earth asteroids and extract resources.

Approach and milestones

Turion argues that vertical integration matters in space, because parts from different vendors create interface problems, and that software sets the limits of what space infrastructure can do. Its timeline lists the acquisition of Tychee Research Group, an award under the Space Systems Command Golden Dome space-based interceptor effort, and an award on the Andromeda RG-XX IDIQ contract. Recent news says it raised more than 75 million US dollars in a Series B round and was recognized as a space-based interceptor performer. Its DROID spacecraft is described as flying with rendezvous and proximity operations capability to low Earth orbit.
