ATIK Cameras

Low-noise imaging cameras for space domain awareness and astronomy

About ATIK Cameras

Atik Cameras designs and manufactures low-noise, high-sensitivity imaging cameras for astronomy, space domain awareness, life sciences and industrial inspection. Founded in 2001 to make high-performance astronomical imaging affordable, the company now builds and tests every system at ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accredited facilities in Portugal and has grown into one of Europe's established OEM suppliers of low-noise imaging. Atik is the parent brand of Opus Instruments and QSI Imaging and a wholly owned subsidiary of SDI Group plc, with more than 25 years of precision imaging experience and a network of trained dealers and integration partners.

Space domain awareness

  • Cameras engineered to capture satellites, debris and other fast-moving, faint space objects, including targets at 40,000 km altitude and non-cooperative objects, using advanced sensors and proprietary cooling
  • Customisation of mechanical housings, thermal management, software integration and network protocols for single observatories or global sensor networks
  • European manufacture for supply chain security and compliance, with high-volume capacity for large deployments; a US government space contractor is quoted using Atik cameras extensively in telescope operations

Products

The XGbE series includes the XGbE-26, built around a 26 megapixel sensor, designed for continuous long-distance deployment and linear scaling in synchronised clusters: an aggregating switch consolidates many units over a 100 Gb/s QSFP uplink with a redundant backup path, GPS timing keeps frames aligned to under one millisecond across every camera, and the unit can be mixed with the wide-field XGbE-60 under a single network. Options include integrated LED signalling and a liquid-cooled version for strict sensor temperature control. Atik also supplied the cameras for the Dragonfly Telephoto Array expansion led by Pieter van Dokkum of Yale University and Roberto Abraham of the University of Toronto, which studies dark matter and faint structures in the night sky, and for MOTHRA, described as the world's largest all-lens telescope. In-house capabilities cover custom mechanical design, specialised electronics and software development.
