Protostar Labs

About Protostar Labs

Protostar Labs builds onboard AI, FPGA-based data processing, sensing systems and space hardware for autonomous missions in orbit, and applies the same technology to demanding industries on Earth. The company is based in Croatia, with offices in Osijek and Zagreb and a registered address in Belisce, and has a team of more than 20 engineers and scientists spanning computer vision, machine learning, physics, software engineering and electronics. It began as a group of young engineers in the Astronomical Society Anonymus who used computer vision to analyse astronomical images and saw wider industrial uses for the technology.

Products

  • Onboard data processing unit: a compact, radiation-tolerant computing module for high-reliability processing that integrates with satellite subsystems
  • A software toolkit for deploying AI and machine learning models directly to FPGAs for low-latency, efficient inference
  • Object detection, segmentation and classification algorithms optimised for FPGA hardware
  • FPGA IP cores for efficient, fault-tolerant data compression to maximise downlink efficiency
  • Spacecraft inspection systems: autonomous, low-power vision systems with event-driven recording and up to eight camera heads for monitoring structures and mechanisms
  • Interface and adapter boards for camera and sensor integration, including a dual-camera, IMU-ready adapter for Holoscan and Jetson and a flex-rigid bridge from Raspberry Pi CSI-2 cameras to Lattice Versa kits

Missions

Protostar Labs flew a software-defined payload on the OPS-SAT Intel Cyclone V FPGA to demonstrate real-time telemetry analysis, anomaly detection and in-orbit FPGA reconfiguration. Its Light Pollution Characterization Module measures the spectral and temporal properties of Earth's artificial light from low Earth orbit with single-pixel detectors, and the CROMIS chromosphere monitoring instrument is a dedicated H-alpha space telescope for full-disk, high-cadence solar imaging to support space weather monitoring. The company has worked with UMass Lowell on onboard cloud segmentation and is part of a strategic partnership for a regional space initiative. Partner and client logos include the European Space Agency, Lattice Semiconductor, Koncar, Fraunhofer, FER and UMass Lowell.
