About Lumibird

Lumibird is a French laser technology group, formed in October 2017 when KEOPSYS, the fiber laser company founded by Marc Le Flohic in Lannion, merged with the QUANTEL group, which specialised in solid-state lasers. The group adopted the Lumibird name in May 2018. It designs, manufactures and markets high performance lasers for scientific, industrial and medical customers, and reports 25 years of experience in three core technologies: solid-state lasers, laser diodes and fiber lasers.

Products and markets

  • Solid-state lasers, laser diodes and components
  • Fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers, including high power fiber lasers
  • Time of flight LiDAR and rangefinders, including Doppler LiDAR systems for wind measurement through its Halo Photonics brand
  • Military laser rangefinders for naval, land and airborne applications
  • Modules for counter unmanned aerial systems, offered off the shelf so that a system integrator can combine them into a complete system
  • Custom designed lasers for air, naval and land use, plus maintenance, repair and repair training for its own and third party lasers

Defence and air defence

In 2022 Lumibird acquired the defence laser rangefinder business of Saab, now Lumibird Photonics Sweden, with a site in Gothenburg. The company says that business brings more than 60 years of experience in military laser rangefinders and that over 5,000 long range units have been delivered to more than 30 countries. The rangefinders use solid-state laser technology at the eyesafe 1.5 micrometre wavelength, and their high repetition rate improves tracking accuracy on fast moving and manoeuvring targets. The Vidar rangefinder suits naval and ground based air defence and works against small targets such as UAVs. The Odipro is designed for armoured vehicles and can be used against ground and aircraft threats, while the Hildur fills the gap between long range models and medium range fiber and diode rangefinders. In 2025 the group announced orders from Rheinmetall Air Defense for Vidar rangefinders to be built into the Skyranger 30 short range air defence system, worth around 5 million euro, with deliveries scheduled from 2025 to 2028.

Company

The group grew through acquisitions including Quantel in 2017, Ellex Medical, Convergent, Optotek Medical and Halo Photonics. It operates 12 production and research sites, makes its own components and uses lean manufacturing. For the 2025 financial year it reported revenue of 225.6 million euro, and in July 2026 it entered exclusive negotiations to sell its medical division to IPG Photonics Corporation.
