Loft Dynamics

Loft Dynamics AG designs, manufactures and operates virtual reality flight simulation training devices (FSTDs) for helicopters and other aircraft. Founded in 2016 as VRM Switzerland and based near Zurich in Duebendorf, Switzerland, the company was the first to receive EASA and FAA qualifications for VR flight simulators. It also has a US headquarters at Santa Monica Airport in California.

Each device combines a 360 degree panoramic 3D view, a dynamic motion platform and a full replica cockpit. According to the company, its FSTDs cost 20 times less than traditional full flight simulators, are 10 times smaller, and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent compared with training in a real helicopter.

Customers and partners

The site lists installed devices with operators in Austria, France, Germany, Greenland, Italy, Norway, Switzerland and the United States, including Heli Academy, Heli Sitterdorf and Meravo. Airbus Helicopters integrates the device into its own training offering; its executive vice president for customer support and services is quoted on the site about the partnership. Loft Dynamics and Pathfinder Aviation have made H125 VR simulator training available in Alaska.

Milestones

The company received the first EASA FTD Level 3 qualification for a VR-based helicopter simulator, then rebranded as Loft Dynamics after a US$20 million investment led by US investors including Craft Ventures, Sky Dayton and Up.Partners, and opened its first US hub at Santa Monica.
