Cities Today

Cities Today is a magazine and news site on sustainable urban development, launched in 2010 as the first global magazine to carry analysis, comment and best practice on the subject, connecting local governments with public and private sector solutions. Published by PFD Media Group, it has become a knowledge platform for city leaders on mobility, the Internet of Things, safety and security, resilience and resource efficiency, with daily coverage of digitalisation, artificial intelligence, connected and autonomous vehicles, micromobility, smart lighting, data governance and climate action. Cities Today Institute

• Founded in 2019 after Cities Today had organised 20 peer-to-peer meetings in North America, Latin America and Europe
• Runs the City Leadership Forums, invitation-only roundtables of 20 city leaders meeting every six months for in-depth discussion of what is and is not working in delivering sustainable and inclusive services
• Chaired by Bob Bennett, former chief innovation officer of Kansas City, with a mission to help community leaders design and implement policies, strategies and projects through training, leadership forums, peer mentoring, tools and live forums
• Recent additions to the institute include the former San Francisco transport strategy chief and the former chief information officer of Prague, and the institute has worked with cities and NVIDIA on AI adoption

Coverage and services

Recent reporting covers a Toyota Mobility Foundation and POLIS funding challenge for European cities on transport inequality, London's shared e-bike parking and new e-bike rules, Pittsburgh's AI and digital modernisation plans, Dayton's use of AI in transit analysis, Singapore's visual positioning tests, Detroit's traffic signal priority for firefighters, Latin America's 10,000-strong electric bus fleet and Madrid's low emission zone. The publication also produces a guide for start-ups and scale-ups comparing cities on infrastructure, funding, tax benefits and access to capital and talent. The Cities Today Studio, an independent team, designs and produces marketing materials and runs email and social media campaigns for companies, governments, NGOs and academic institutions in transport, lighting, waste, water and IoT, and sponsorship of the City Leadership Forums is handled through the institute.
