Energy company refining jet fuel with new catalyst technology

Chevron

About Chevron

Chevron Corporation is a US energy company that explores for oil and natural gas, refines and markets fuels including jet fuel, gasoline and diesel, and produces chemicals, with the stated aim of meeting the world's growing demand for energy while lowering the carbon intensity of its operations. Its site describes energy that is affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner, people as its greatest resource, and projects ranging from the Empire Terminal in Louisiana and joint ventures in Venezuela to carbon capture, utilisation and storage deployments around the world and its Texas operations, where it notes the state produces more crude oil than any other.

Jet fuel

  • Chevron's Fuels Conversion Research and Development team at the Richmond Refinery developed ICR 259, a hydrocracking catalyst that lets refineries increase jet fuel production using existing equipment, raising jet fuel yield by as much as 10 percent compared with older catalyst platforms
  • The catalyst is fully deployed at the Pascagoula and El Segundo refineries and in one of Richmond's three hydrocracking modules, with full deployment at Richmond expected in 2027; the company says it has already delivered 63 million US dollars in value and is projected to generate up to 83 million dollars more
  • The programme responds to IATA projections that global air travel will more than double between 2024 and 2050, and the company compares the catalyst to a recipe change inside the hydrocracker rather than new ovens
