About Blackstone Laboratories

Blackstone Laboratories, Inc. is an independent used oil analysis laboratory at 416 E Pettit Ave, Fort Wayne, Indiana. The company has been analyzing oil since 1985 and tests samples from aircraft engines, gas and diesel engines, marine engines, motorcycles, transmissions, transfer cases and differentials, industrial equipment and off-highway machinery such as excavators, cranes and wind turbines.

Services

  • Standard oil analysis: a breakdown of wear metals and contaminants, a comparison with averages for the engine type, written comments from an analyst, guidance on whether anything needs attention and suggestions on what to do next
  • Additional tests listed on the tests and price list, including total acid number and particle count for industrial oils
  • Detection of coolant leaks, fuel or water contamination, and checks on air and oil filtration
  • Trend monitoring over repeated samples to show whether an engine is wearing normally and whether oil can be run longer
  • Test kits sent at no charge; the sample is paid for when it is returned

The site states that every report is written by a person, not a computer, in plain English, and that callers reach a person on the phone. It also publishes a newsletter, The Oil Report, with separate gas and diesel and aircraft editions, articles on reading reports, and sample reports for each engine type.

Aircraft oil analysis

The aircraft reports page notes that most aircraft engines lack the electronic management systems of modern car engines, rely on the pilot to manage the mixture and need a higher level of maintenance and awareness. Blackstone says its aircraft reports go beyond the data and include diagnostic comments based on the specific results, pointing out areas to watch and inspect, and an aircraft article series covers topics such as abrasive contamination, fuel dilution, oil consumption, corrosion, bearing wear, valve problems and detonation and how worried an owner should be about each.

Prices

The site lists the standard sample cost at US$40; rates change; confirm with the company.
