BlackSky
Real-time satellite imagery and space-based intelligence
About BlackSky
BlackSky is a United States company that provides space-based intelligence from its own constellation of high-resolution Earth observation satellites. The company was founded to accelerate Earth observation from space for real-time monitoring, and it serves defence, intelligence and global security customers. Its site says it captures and automatically analyses up to 15 time-diverse images of a location of interest through the day.
Constellation
BlackSky owns and operates a very high-resolution constellation flying at mid-inclination in low Earth orbit, chosen for time-diverse monitoring of change around the world. The Gen-2 constellation launched in 2021 and the Gen-3 constellation in 2025. Gen-3 satellites are built at the company's production facility in Tukwila, Washington.
BlackSky Spectra platform
BlackSky Spectra is the company's tasking and analytics platform, powered by OpenWhere. Users task the constellation in a few clicks, satellites collect and return data in near real time, and the data is analysed automatically. Imagery products include:
- Repeat collection of ground truth at critical locations
- Stereo pairs or five-frame sets for 3D products
- Five-frame motion analysis from a single satellite pass
- Night-time imaging
- Area 2 by 1 imagery for sites larger than a single frame, such as large airports or ports
Automated detection and classification models identify and count vessels, aircraft and vehicles within a user-defined area, flag changes in object location or status, and let users browse historical imagery. Third-party data sources can be added within the platform.
Company
BlackSky says its software and hardware are developed together for one integrated purpose, with speed as the driving force behind decisions. It works with strategic partners and resellers and publishes leadership and career pages on its site.

BlackSky is listed as a sponsor of the Dubai Airshow 2027 and the Space Symposium 2027. It is also listed as an exhibitor at ADAS 2027 in Manila and at MSPO 2027, the International Defence Industry Exhibition in Poland.
