ABIOVE

Abiove, the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries, represents companies that process, manufacture and trade soybeans, soybean oil, soybean meal and biodiesel. It has offices in Sao Paulo and Brasilia, Brazil. The association was founded on June 11, 1981.

Its main goal is to represent the vegetable oil industry and create value for its members. It also promotes their industrial processes and products. Member companies make or market oilseeds and their byproducts around the world. Abiove has a code of conduct for companies that make soybean meal, vegetable oils and biodiesel and export oilseeds.

Soybeans are Brazil's main oilseed and its most valuable crop by production value. They supply the home market with grain, edible oil and biodiesel, and meal for animal feed. Abiove says Brazil's soybean complex supplies more than 50 percent of the soybeans and almost 30 percent of the soybean meal traded around the world.

The association works with government policy and builds sustainability programs for the soybean chain. It promotes Brazilian products abroad. It also collects statistics and studies to help the sector plan. Each month Abiove updates data on the soybean complex and biodiesel using information from member companies.

Its environmental, social and governance work covers many programs. These include Agro Plus, social and environmental criteria, reverse logistics for packaging and oil, Cerrado monitoring, the Soy Moratorium, the Green Grains Protocol and PSA Cerrado. The Soy Moratorium reports use satellite images to watch for deforestation in the Amazon.

Abiove also covers biodiesel. Biodiesel comes from vegetable oils taken from oilseeds. It can replace mineral diesel in part or in full in diesel engines. The biodiesel section covers certification, programs and plants. A library holds technical notes, reports and publications, including papers on European Union rules for indirect land use change.
