Wind River
VxWorks RTOS and edge software for mission-critical systems
About Wind River
Wind River develops software for mission-critical intelligent systems, from embedded devices at the edge to cloud infrastructure. Its technology is used in space exploration, commercial aircraft, autonomous driving, telecom networks and medical devices, and the company notes that it supplied the first real-time operating system to run on Mars. Wind River says its software is found in billions of products and is supported by services, safety and certification support and a partner ecosystem. The company is led by president Jay Bellissimo and has offices worldwide.
Products
- VxWorks: a safety-certified real-time operating system with deterministic performance, used in more than 600 safety programmes and certifiable to DO-178C and EUROCAE ED-12C, IEC 61508, IEC 62304 and ISO 26262, with a full time-sensitive networking stack and support for AI and machine learning applications
- Wind River Linux, a Yocto Project based embedded Linux subscription with security vulnerability monitoring and long-term maintenance, and eLxr, a Debian-based enterprise Linux for edge systems
- Helix Virtualization Platform, which runs VxWorks, Linux and Android side by side on a single system on chip
- Wind River Studio Developer and Operator tools, including Workspaces, the Diab Compiler, Pipeline Manager, the Studio Testing Suite and Intel Simics simulation, for building, testing, deploying and updating software across device fleets
- Wind River Cloud Platform, an open-source based high-availability infrastructure for virtualised and containerised workloads, and Digital Feedback Loop analytics
Aerospace, defence and government
Wind River's safety-certified technology is used by the US Army, Navy and Air Force, NASA, Airbus, Collins Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, General Dynamics and Leonardo across more than 600 aerospace and defence programmes. The company addresses the move to modular open systems approaches and integrated modular avionics that reduce size, weight, power and cost, the adoption of time-sensitive networking, AI-driven sensor fusion and autonomy at the edge, consolidation of safety-critical and non-critical applications on multi-core processors, and multi-core safety certification and cybersecurity. A developer programme gives students, researchers and professionals free access to its embedded platforms, and more than a thousand universities take part in its university programme.
