Vulcan Wireless
Software-defined radios and antennas for space and defence
About Vulcan Wireless
Vulcan Wireless, Inc. designs and manufactures digital communication systems for space, defence and commercial missions. The company builds software-defined radios, secure networking equipment, antennas and custom payload communication systems, and designs, develops, manufactures, integrates and tests everything in-house so it can supply both standard products and customised solutions. Its headquarters are in Carlsbad, California, near McClellan-Palomar Airport and a short drive from San Diego.
Products
Vulcan Wireless describes itself as a supplier of small satellite communication solutions, with flight-proven hardware across UHF, S-band, X-band and Ka-band. The product catalogue lists:
- NSR-SDR encrypted software-defined radios, including S/S, SSL, XS-HP, XS-HP-HDR and MUOS variants
- Antennas for satellite and terrestrial links
- Chassis products such as the UHF satellite ground terminal, antenna interface system, broadband modem IF switches (4x1 and dual 4x2) and an optical communications testbed
Capabilities
The company supports customers from feasibility studies, mission planning and design conception through hardware verification and full-scale production. Core expertise includes digital signal processing, embedded software for DSPs, microcontrollers, FPGAs and general-purpose processors, encryption, and digital, analogue, RF and microwave, antenna and optical design. An in-house environmental testing lab carries out end-to-end signal analysis and environmental qualification for use on orbit and in the field, and the team runs simulations of the deployment environment to set communications requirements.
Missions
Vulcan Wireless was recognised by Firefly Aerospace as a key supplier for Blue Ghost Mission 1, the first fully successful commercial Moon landing, which completed 14 days of surface operations and sustained communications from the lunar surface. Customer logos on the site include NASA, the United States Marine Corps and DARPA, and the company says it supports the Golden Dome initiative with communications for contested environments.
