About Toptica

TOPTICA Photonics develops and manufactures high-end laser systems for research and industry. The TOPTICA group is headquartered in Graefelfing near Munich, Germany, with further research and production hubs in Rochester, New York, and Bordeaux, France, and a worldwide network of sales and service sites. Founded more than 25 years ago and still independent, the company designs its own laser diodes through TOPTICA EAGLEYARD, part of the group since 2013, and builds diode and fibre lasers, amplifiers and frequency mixing systems covering wavelengths from 190 nm to 0.1 THz, which it describes as the widest spectrum on the market. Its lasers are used in quantum computing, sensing, atomic clocks and quantum communication, two-photon microscopy, semiconductor inspection and metrology, and terahertz imaging and spectroscopy.

Space and astronomy applications

  • SodiumStar sodium guide star lasers that generate artificial guide stars at nearly any point in the sky down to elevation angles below 30 degrees, with fast slewing to follow an astronomical telescope's direction of view, supporting adaptive optics on large telescopes
  • Space situational awareness: SodiumStar-assisted adaptive optics for high-resolution imaging of near-Earth space objects up to geostationary orbit at 36,000 km, relevant to managing space debris and to launch and early orbit phases of space missions
  • Free space optical communication for satellite mega-constellations and deep space optical links, where adaptive optics at ground stations enables multi-terabit links and uplink spacecraft tracking
  • Laser beam-based manoeuvring of small debris particles as a technology for collision avoidance, and ultra-high-resolution spectroscopy of mesospheric sodium for research into the Earth's magnetic field, upper atmosphere air mass movements and solar winds

Other product areas

Ultra-stable clock laser systems with linewidths below 1 Hz for narrow atomic transitions in quantum computing; fibre-coupled femtosecond lasers with clean pulse shapes for two-photon microscopy; and all-diode or fibre laser sources intended to replace bulky gas lasers in semiconductor inspection, metrology and lithography. The site quotes Nobel laureate Theodor W. Haensch of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics describing the company as having grown over 30 years into the world market leader in scientific diode lasers, along with customers at CNRS and Aix-Marseille University. TOPTICA exhibits at events including SEMICON Japan, SfN Neuroscience and the photonics trade fair in Munich, and publishes compliance and material compliance policies covering export control, RoHS and its code of conduct. In July 2026 it appointed Diana Dreyer as Vice President Human Resources.
