Topsoe
Catalysts and technology for sustainable aviation fuel and clean fuels

About Topsoe
Topsoe is a Danish provider of catalysts, technology and solutions for the energy transition, transforming renewable resources into fuels and chemicals, producing low-carbon and conventional fuels, and supplying emission control for clean air. The company was founded in 1940 by Dr Haldor Topsoe, a chemist who studied under Niels Bohr, and is headquartered in Denmark with around 2,500 employees serving customers worldwide. Topsoe A/S is an unlisted, privately owned company, held about 68 percent by Topsoe Holding A/S, about 29 percent by Dahlia Investment of Singapore and about 2 percent by employees. Its stated purpose is "perfecting chemistry for a better world" and it has committed to net zero by 2040.
Sustainable aviation fuel
- HydroFlex technology producing HEFA-SPK ASTM-certified renewable jet fuel from renewable feedstocks as a drop-in replacement for Jet A and A-1
- G2L Biofuels gasification turning waste feedstocks into syngas and then FT-SPK, and G2L eFuels using green hydrogen and captured CO2 to make FT-SPK e-jet fuel and green naphtha, with Fischer-Tropsch technology from strategic partner Sasol under a single-point licence
- Co-processing of renewable feedstock in existing refinery units as an alternative to revamps
- SAF planning, processing and production support, with Topsoe noting that IATA expects two thirds of aviation's net zero reductions to come from SAF
Projects and other markets
Topsoe signed a licensing agreement with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited to supply its kerosene hydrotreating technology for the Mumbai refinery, where a 4,000 tonne per day kerosene hydrotreater will co-process 5 percent used cooking oil to produce SAF for international flights from Indian airports, with commissioning expected by the end of 2026. In the United States it helped Montana Renewables in Great Falls convert idle hydrotreater capacity into what it describes as the largest SAF production in the western hemisphere. The company also won a contract for Uniper's e-methanol facility in Sweden, serves shipping with ammonia and e-methanol pathways, runs the Topsoe Academy training programme and publishes the Fuel for Thought podcast.
