Square Peg Communications
Satellite communications test equipment, aero datalink gateways and base stations

About Square Peg Communications
Square Peg Communications Inc. is a satellite communications engineering company based at 4017 Carling Avenue, Suite 200, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. For more than 30 years it has supplied test and simulation hardware, aircraft datalink gateways, base station equipment and systems engineering to satellite and wireless network providers, with early work on aviation safety services and milestones such as live in-flight television. Its current focus is testing for emerging technologies such as 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and direct-to-device connectivity, and in June 2026 it announced a collaboration with VIAVI Solutions to advance 5G NTN testing against 3GPP Releases 17, 18 and 19. Co-founders Michael, who holds an M.Eng from Carleton University and leads the business, and John, with over 40 years in radio and satellite communications, head a team experienced in DSP-based modems for mobile satellite channels.
Testers and simulators
- RLS-2100 Radio Link Simulator: emulates terminal movement, atmospheric effects, interference, satellite handovers, beam switching and reflected signals for hardware-in-the-loop testing of multi-orbit satellite solutions, with versions for 5G NTN, LEO and military users
- BGAN Physical Layer Tester (BPLT) for BGAN, FleetBroadband and SwiftBroadband terminals, plus Inmarsat-C (CPLT) and IsatData Pro (DPLT) physical layer testers
- Aeronautical Ground Data Unit (GDU) and Aeronautical Ground Earth Station (GES) emulator for developing and certifying aircraft satcom terminals
- Voice Test Platform (VTP)
Base station equipment and OEM subsystems
Square Peg supplies subsystems or complete hubs for satcom base stations needing carrier-grade performance, including the Classic Aero GES channel unit subsystem and the MCP channel unit subsystem, and licenses core satcom technology for incorporation into customers' own equipment. Engineering services cover satellite communications system design, DSP modems, prototype equipment and studies, and Windows, Linux and embedded real-time software. The company planned live demonstrations at the Small Satellite Conference in Salt Lake City from 23 to 26 August 2026 and recruits satellite communications product development and test automation engineers.
