About Mission Aviation Fellowship

Mission Aviation Fellowship, known as MAF, is a Christian not-for-profit organisation that uses aircraft to reach isolated communities. It began in 1945 as the Christian Airmen's Missionary Fellowship, and Betty Greene flew its inaugural missionary flight to Mexico on 23 February 1946. MAF-US is based in Nampa, Idaho, is a 501(c)3 charity and is part of a family of MAF organisations in countries around the world.

What MAF does

MAF says that people living in remote places can be cut off from health care, education and supplies by geography such as jungles, mountains and deserts, or by social, political or religious barriers, and that its aircraft are the only way many of them can be reached. Each year it provides aviation services to more than 400 mission agencies, churches and humanitarian organisations. Its stated work includes:

  • Carrying missionaries, evangelists, Bible translators and other workers to remote communities
  • Delivering cargo such as school supplies, food and medicine
  • Developing the skills of its national staff overseas
  • Supporting access to food, clean water, health care and education
  • Backing projects in agriculture, conservation and wildlife

The MAF-US fleet

The MAF-US fleet flies over a million miles every year. It includes thirteen Cessna 206 piston singles seating six, eleven Cessna 208 Caravan turboprops seating ten, twelve KODIAK turboprops seating ten, one Cessna 210 and three Cessna 172 aircraft. The Cessna 206 has long been the mainstay of the fleet, with a large cabin and double cargo doors. The Caravan carries more load, further and faster but needs longer airstrips. The KODIAK has a high lift wing and a 750 horsepower engine to operate from shorter airstrips while carrying heavier loads, and it burns jet fuel rather than avgas, which has replaced the Cessna 206 in some regions. The Cessna 172 is used to train new pilots.
