About LITEF

Northrop Grumman LITEF GmbH is a German developer and manufacturer of inertial sensors and navigation systems based at Lörracher Strasse 18 in Freiburg im Breisgau, where about 600 employees work on its core mechanical, fibre optic gyroscope (FOG) and micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) technologies. Founded in 1961 and part of the Northrop Grumman Corporation while keeping its own ITAR-free technology and product portfolio, LITEF has supplied precise navigation and position information for 65 years under the harshest conditions on land, at sea and in the air, including when GNSS signals are disrupted or unavailable, and it is certified by EASA and the German Military Aviation Authority (LufABw) as a design and production organisation.

Aviation products

  • LCR-100 Attitude and Heading Reference System, based on fibre optic gyroscopes and MEMS accelerometers and established on a broad range of airborne platforms, plus an enhanced variant serving as backup inertial navigation during GPS outages
  • LCR-110, a low-cost, small and light hybrid GNSS/inertial reference system, and the MEMS-based LCR-350B AHRS for demanding operational conditions
  • The EF2000 IMU, a flight-safety-relevant attitude and heading reference system developed for flight control of the Eurofighter Typhoon, and the Main Computer that controls the avionics and weapons systems of the Tornado
  • The LITEF Seat Sequencer (LISS) controlling the escape sequence of ejection seats, and the in-house µIMU for stabilisation and navigation
  • Navigation for fighter jets, military helicopters in poor visibility and next-generation autonomous aircraft

Other applications

  • Customised six-axis inertial measurement units built from its sensor portfolio for demanding accuracy, form factor and interface requirements
  • Positioning and orientation for land vehicles in GNSS-denied environments, navigation systems for surface vessels and submarines, and ultra-precise IMUs for missiles, torpedoes and platform stabilisation
  • High-precision IMUs for autonomous systems, mobile mapping and Industry 4.0

Company

LITEF combines physics, electronics and engineering in development and test laboratories and clean and super-clean rooms at its Freiburg site, celebrated 65 years of partnership with the German Armed Forces at ILA Berlin, and aims to be the market and technology leader in inertial systems. It runs a code of conduct and BKMS whistleblower system, has set targets for women in management and on its supervisory board, and publishes sustainability, partner and news pages.

Shows

LITEF appears in the exhibitor lists of the Paris Air Show 2027 and VERTICON 2027.
