About Georgia Tech Research Institute

The Georgia Tech Research Institute, known as GTRI, is the nonprofit applied research arm of the Georgia Institute of Technology. It is headquartered on the Georgia Tech campus in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia.

GTRI develops advanced technology solutions and large-scale system prototypes. It aims them at hard problems in national security, the state of Georgia and the wider human condition. It is a designated University Affiliated Research Center. It works with Georgia Tech to support economic growth in Georgia, serve national security, improve lives and educate future technology leaders.

The institute began in 1934 as the State Engineering Experiment Station. It says it has stayed true to that start, doing real-world research for government and industry.

Its work is grouped into four areas of expertise. These are sensors, information, systems and technology for society. Research happens in laboratories on and off the main campus. They include labs for advanced concepts, aerospace, transportation and advanced systems, applied systems, cybersecurity and hardware evaluation, electro-optical systems, electronic systems, information and communications, and sensors and electromagnetic applications. GTRI also has more than 20 field offices around the United States.

In aviation and defence, a featured project is a 142-ton radar threat simulator. It helps US pilots and aircrews train to evade enemy missiles before they fly into contested airspace. GTRI also runs an Office of Commercialization. This office helps researchers protect their ideas and bring their work to industry.

The institute also teaches and reaches out. Its VIP program lets undergraduate and graduate students earn academic credit by working with faculty on projects. It runs K 12 STEM outreach, professional education and programmes for veterans. It also offers research jobs, student roles and high school internships.
