Florida International University, also called FIU, is a public research university in Miami, Florida. It describes itself as the only public research university in Miami. It has served South Florida for more than 50 years.

FIU offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. Students can study on campus or fully online. The university lists more than 190 degrees across the humanities and STEM fields, including online programs. More than 54,000 students attend, which makes FIU one of the largest universities in the United States.

FIU is designated a Preeminent State Research University, and research is a major part of its mission. Over about half a century, its researchers have won more than $2 billion in awards and earned more than 300 patents. The Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work and the College of Engineering and Computing are two of the colleges, schools and centers that carry out research.

The university works from several sites. The Modesto A. Maidique Campus is in Miami, and the Biscayne Bay Campus is in North Miami. Other sites include the Engineering Center, FIU at I-75 in Miramar, FIU Downtown on Brickell, the Miami Beach Urban Studios and an office in Washington, D.C.

FIU also has museums and research sites. They include the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, The Wolfsonian-FIU and the Aquarius Reef Base. Students can join clubs, go to concerts and cheer on the teams. The FIU Panthers compete in more than 17 Division-I sports.

Admissions guides cover freshman, transfer, international and graduate students. FIU Online serves students who learn at a distance. The university has a library system, student support services and information on professional licensure.
