DeTect Inc
Bird and drone detection radar systems for aviation safety in the United States
About DeTect
DeTect Inc designs and builds radar systems that detect birds, drones and other small flying targets. It is based in Panama City, Florida, in the United States. Its radars serve airports, military airfields, wind farms, security sites and drone operators.
The company has delivered more than 1,000 of its MERLIN bird radars since 2003. They have gone to customers in the US, Canada, Europe, Africa and Asia. DeTect makes both 2D and True3D radars. It says its signal processing is made to track small, low-profile targets that do not move in straight lines. The same technology is used in its HARRIER security and surveillance radar and in its DroneWatcher drone detection radars.
DeTect lists several system types. Aircraft birdstrike avoidance radar gives air traffic controllers and pilots real-time warnings of bird risk. Bird detection radar systems and bird control radar systems support airports, industrial sites and public events. Wind energy systems assess and reduce risk to birds and bats at wind farms. An aircraft detection lighting system manages turbine obstruction lights so they switch on when aircraft are near. DroneWatcher combines drone radar with radiofrequency detection. The company also supports beyond visual line of sight drone flights.
The company has a record of firsts. In 2003 it installed the first production bird radars at military airfields. In 2009 it introduced what it calls the first purpose-built solid-state bird detection radar. In 2016 it released DroneWatcher. In 2018 it introduced a True3D bird radar sensor.
DeTect has offices in Canada, Poland, South Korea, the UK and the US. It also has field and partner offices in over 60 countries. Its facilities cover more than 20,000 square feet of office, laboratory and manufacturing space in Florida, Poland and South Korea.
Each system comes with full support. This covers project design, in-house engineering and manufacturing, delivery and installation, concept-of-operations development, human factors design, operational integration and user training. Remote and on-site service is available at any hour. Its staff include engineers, scientists, aviation safety specialists, biologists and radar ornithologists.
