North Dakota's oldest and largest university, Grand Forks
About University of North Dakota
The University of North Dakota, or UND, is in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It calls itself the state's oldest and largest university. It was founded in 1883, and its campus covers 521 acres.
UND offers more than 250 accredited degrees on campus and online. Fall 2026 enrollment reached an all-time high of 15,908 students from all 50 states. The university says it serves the largest number of exclusively online students among nonprofit flagship universities in its eight-state region.
UND is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and holds R1 status for very high research activity. The website says its research generates $1.5 billion in annual economic impact across the state and region. The National Science Foundation ranks UND number 144.
Featured programs include air traffic management, where students complete the FAA Academy curriculum at UND. Other programs include business analytics, cybersecurity, music therapy, and medicine, nursing and health. UND is home to the only law school and the only medical school in North Dakota.
Its flight school and helicopter operations students appear among its student stories. One student balances flight training with fire calls and National Guard service, while keeping a 4.0 GPA.
Student support includes a counseling center that offers confidential help with stress, anxiety and relationships. The site also has veteran and military services, since one in seven students are veterans, active duty members, spouses or military dependents.
UND says its campus is one of the most beautiful colleges in the Midwest and the safest college in North Dakota. It states a commitment to a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all students, employees and visitors.
