CONVERGE CFD software with autonomous meshing, Madison, Wisconsin
About Convergent Science
Convergent Science is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software company headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin. Its main product is CONVERGE, software that simulates three-dimensional fluid flow. CONVERGE builds the mesh on its own, so engineers do not spend time on grid generation.
The company began in 1997, when its co-founders were graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It started as a CFD consulting firm. The founders found they spent most of their time making meshes for clients, so they built their own code instead. The first CONVERGE licenses were sold in 2008. Branches are in New Braunfels and Houston in Texas, Detroit in Michigan, Linz in Austria and Pune in India. Distributors work worldwide, and IDAJ supports sales in China, Japan and South Korea.
CONVERGE uses a cut-cell approach that handles complex shapes and moving parts. Adaptive Mesh Refinement adds cells only where the flow needs them. The software includes models for fluid-structure interaction, conjugate heat transfer, spray and combustion. The SAGE detailed chemistry solver is fully coupled with the flow solver. Users can add custom models through user defined functions. Simulations run on many processors and scale to thousands of cores.
CONVERGE 6 is the latest release. It lets AI models such as Claude, Codex and Gemini work in CONVERGE Studio through a Model Context Protocol server. It also brings a stronger GPU solver for multi-GPU runs, an improved steady-state solver and a tool for automatic reduction of chemical mechanisms.
Applications include gas turbines, rockets, hydrogen, internal combustion engines, burners, compressors, fans and blowers, injectors and sprays, pumps, valves and wind energy. Newer areas include e-mobility, oil and gas, and biomedical work. The company says it supports designs from gas turbine engines to mechanical heart valves.
CONVERGE Horizon is a cloud platform, built with Oracle, for running simulations on demand. It offers on-demand licensing and a choice of data center locations. The company also runs free webinars and training courses in the US, Europe and India, and hosts the CONVERGE CFD Conference. It works with research partners such as Argonne National Laboratory, IFP Energies nouvelles and Sandia National Laboratories, and with software partners such as Gamma Technologies, Spatial and JMAG.
