AI Verse
Synthetic image datasets for defence and drone computer vision
About AI Verse
AI Verse is a French software company that makes synthetic image datasets for computer vision teams. Its tools create labelled training images on demand, so teams do not need cameras, field crews or outside labelling firms. Its customers work in defence, drones, security, smart home and robotics.
The company builds procedural engines. A user sets the object classes, environment, lighting, sensor type, weather and viewpoint. The engine then makes fully labelled images, at any scale. AI Verse says one image takes about four seconds on one GPU, and work can be spread over up to ten GPUs. It says datasets that once took a team three months can be done in hours.
There are two main engines. Helios makes indoor image datasets. Gaia makes outdoor image datasets. Both use physics-based rendering. The company says its engine simulates real sensor effects, such as infrared thermal signatures, lens distortion, motion blur and haze. Scenes are built from a standard 3D asset database, with randomised object positions, lighting and background clutter.
Every image comes with eight types of pixel-perfect labels. These are classes, instances, depth, normals, 2D and 3D bounding boxes, 2D and 3D keypoints, skeletons, and colour. Output can be RGB or infrared. No hand labelling is needed. Teams can also create rare cases, such as bad weather, odd object layouts and sensor failures. Because no real people or places are used, the datasets avoid privacy concerns.
Use cases include military vehicle detection, drone detection against hostile drones, weapon and threat detection, surveillance and anomaly detection, obstacle detection, and autonomous navigation and robotics. Smart home uses include abandoned luggage detection and posture recognition, such as spotting a fall.
AI Verse is a NATO DIANA company, picked to develop dual-use synthetic image technology for Allied defence AI. It says it supplies defence, aerospace and drone makers across Europe. The company is backed by Supernova, Innovacomm and Bpifrance.
