About 3D.aero

3D.aero GmbH is a Hamburg based company that builds sensor and automation systems for aviation maintenance and industrial painting. It is part of MTU Aero Engines. Its systems digitize aircraft parts and test processes completely.

Surface inspection checks aircraft parts to micrometer accuracy. The HP-X line includes mobile systems for use on the shop floor and fixed systems that capture complex parts fully. HP-FX is a flexible system that can be used as a cobot in hand guided mode. It resolves depth to 0.1 µm and produces a full damage report in about 2 minutes. HP-AX is an automatic system that uses industrial robots to digitize large parts. It can run 24 hours a day.

Paint automation uses 3D part recognition to create robot paths without manual programming. Its sensors detect parts in the process and recognize positions or manual movements. Its software reduces the work of manual programming and supports stable, efficient painting.

Tool measurement checks tools for quality control in industrial production. Special solutions cover custom automation and sensor tasks for aviation, such as scanning large structures like aircraft shells with special machines.

The technology base includes the in-house 3D.OS platform, which brings together sensors, robotics and analytics. Sensors include 2D and 3D measurement, including white light interferometry. Data processing uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to clean and interpret measurement data.

System integration covers design, build, safety concepts and CE and CSA certification. Mechanics, electronics, software and vision are supplied from one source. The company also does research with industry partners and research institutes.

MTU Maintenance Hannover says the HP-FX cut surface checks on engine parts from one or two days to a few minutes. FANUC says the vision systems allow automated coating of a wide range of parts. The company is at MRO Europe in Amsterdam on 28 and 29 October 2026.
