4D Technology

4D Technology makes optical metrology and 3D surface measurement instruments for precision inspection, interferometry and real-time analysis. The company is a subsidiary of Onto Innovation and is based in the United States. Its dynamic interferometry technology takes high-resolution surface and wavefront measurements despite vibration, turbulence and noise, which lets the instruments work in locations such as observatories, optical manufacturing shops and aircraft flight lines. The company states that virtually every space- and ground-based telescope of the last two decades has been tested with 4D instruments.

Shop floor gauges

The 4D InSpec family brings portable, high-resolution 3D inspection to the shop floor in handheld or robot-mounted form. With one-button operation the gauges quantify defects such as pits, scratches and corrosion and geometries such as edge break, and the 4Di InSpec SR adds surface roughness measurement. The 4D SurfSpec gauge measures coatings surfaces. These tools serve aviation MRO, aerospace, precision machining, medical devices, renewable energy and automotive customers, and the company runs webinars on moving aviation MRO inspection from 2D to 3D measurement and on surface roughness specifications.
