ZEISS
Optics and optoelectronics group with simulation projection and metrology

About ZEISS
ZEISS is a German technology enterprise operating in optics and optoelectronics, founded in 1846 by Carl Zeiss and wholly owned since 1889 by the Carl Zeiss Foundation established by Ernst Abbe. Around 46,600 employees in some 50 countries generated revenue of nearly 12 billion euros in fiscal year 2024/25 across four segments: Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Quality and Research, Medical Technology and Consumer Markets. For aerospace and defence audiences the group's relevant activities include simulation projection, industrial quality and research solutions, OEM optical systems and specialised optics, and ZEISS exhibits at I/ITSEC and the Paris Air Show.
Solutions for aerospace, defence and simulation
- Simulation Projection Solutions: ZEISS VELVET SIM projectors create a realistic impression of virtual reality for simulation applications such as training systems, and the company also supplies complete systems for modern planetariums
- Research and Quality Solutions providing measurement, microscopy and inspection data for research and industrial applications, including quality management for high-technology manufacturing
- OEM Solutions for developing, constructing and manufacturing precise components, optical modules and systems for other manufacturers
- Spectroscopy solutions and components for process control, and Digital Solutions engineering industry-specific software for business-critical products and processes
Other business areas
- Semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplied to chip makers for more than 50 years
- Medical technology for ophthalmology and microsurgery, vision care from eye examinations to spectacle lenses, and extended reality optics
- Consumer optics including photography and cinema lenses, which were used on the Moon landing, binoculars, spotting scopes, riflescopes and thermal imaging devices
Company
As a foundation-owned company, ZEISS is required to make a positive contribution to society and the environment, and the foundation uses its dividends to fund academic and research programmes. The company describes itself as the pioneer of science in optics, serving the semiconductor industry, e-mobility providers, Nobel Prize winners, medical clinics, film makers and eye care practitioners. ZEISS has been present in the United States since opening a branch on Fifth Avenue in New York in 1925, marking 100 years in December 2025, and operates an innovation centre in California. It publishes an annual report and company figures on its website.
