Volo Mission
Long line and aerial firefighting helicopter training at the Volo Ranch, Texas
About Volo Mission
Volo Mission is a training, consulting and advising company for the helicopter external load and aerial firefighting industries. It provides comprehensive services to meet the demands of these industries. It was founded by a husband and wife team who wanted to address gaps in traditional long line operations.
The main training base is The Ranch, a 100-acre site in Campbell, Texas, about 65 miles from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The Ranch has on-site housing and is set up so that students can focus on training with fewer interruptions. A second training location, The Quarry, is at Jack Garland Airport in North Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Courses cover long line training for vertical reference pilots, ground crew training, aerial firefighting, precision construction, job preparation and assessment, and recurrent training. Training combines classroom work with practical flying and covers human factors, safety, and leadership skills. Pilots come from around the world each year.
Corporate training includes a foundation building course for long line skills, a comprehensive long line course that takes a pilot from little or no long line time to a competent level, short courses, and a job assessment for busy companies. On-site training for pilots, ground crews and leadership teams is available in the United States and internationally, with some limitations.
The consulting service is led by people with decades of experience in the helicopter industry. The company is an approved FAA Part 133 external load operator, and it uses that experience to help clients apply for Part 133 approval, assess and select long line equipment, prepare for FAA inspections and flight tests, and build training programmes.
Professional development services help individuals and companies improve their potential and growth. The company also offers keynote speaking on distractions and emotional intelligence, and it provides scholarships through the Whirly-Girls Scholarship Fund, which it runs with Erickson Incorporated.
Volo Mission is a member of the Helicopter Association International, the Airborne Public Safety Association and Whirly-Girls International. Past clients include Hawkeye Helicopters, Duke Energy and the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation.
